Legend of Zelda the timeline is a confusing hot mess. They are all connected but there is an alternate timeline.

There was one where Link was defeated during Ocarina Time which leads to the timeline that gives us Seasonal Story and original NES games. There’s where is Young Link, come in Ocarina Time, stopped Ganondorf’s plan and somehow it led to a future Link who could turn into a wolf Twilight Princess. You have another timeline where Adult Link seals Ganon and then actually gets on the train Spirit Path.

But before the timeline forked, there was an earlier time. here Four Swords and amazing mini hat occur. And even before that, even before Hyrule was founded, before the legend of Zelda became a thing, there had been— Sky Sword. This is the main beginning of the Link myth.

Sky Sword is the first game with Link and Zelda. That’s where Master Sword was made. This is where Hyrule himself was made. This is where the whole cycle begins. Must be massive right? This has to be a great epic story with a big focus on storytelling.

Now here comes the part where Ron Howard’s voice goes off and says, “No.”

The problem was when Nintendo tried to release Legend of Zelda: Sword of Skyward, that was during the days of the Nintendo Wii. If you’re not old enough to remember the Wii, it’s a strange system. Instead of traditional controls, the game features a long candy-like controller called the Wiimote and a secondary bean-shaped object called the Nunchuk. Both are connected to each other and require a motion controller and sensor bar to perform some initial motion control. It’s not bad but it’s not good.

Nintendo was desperate to show off how worthy it was because the developers didn’t want to make games for the Wii. Why work on motion controls when you can do the same things you normally do for PlayStation and Xbox? So Nintendo pulled on Hail Mary and decided to tell the story of how Link got his start — just for those who want to play with motion control. you want origin? You have to kiss the ring.

So instead of traditional game controls, you have to play with Wiimote and Nunchuk. The Wiimote sits in one hand and you swing it to swing the sword. Shield is the other side. Even the menus require you to point your Wiimote at the screen to move around the cursor. Having said that, the game’s story takes a backseat to the motion control demo. Everything gets complicated. Swinging from a vine, flying through the air, falling from the sky, firing a bow or catapult, all require motion control and sometimes work and sometimes Link will die. They are the rub.

How does this translate to Switch? Well, not good. You have two options for control. You can play in the original method, Joy-Con in both hands. Since the Switch doesn’t use a sensor bar like the Wii, this means you’ll be calibrating the gyro-scope a lot. I have to do it almost every time I’m going to do a motion activity. I probably pressed the Y button (recalibrate button) more than any other button in the game.

Alternatively, if you’re playing on the go, switch the controls to “button controls”. But instead of buttons for swords, you use proper joysticks. Tilted it in a different direction to swing Link’s arm. It’s messy but you have to because Nintendo uses all these mechanics. Enemies will come at you with their swords at a certain angle which means you swing your sword in the right direction or immediately deflect it.

Luckily, a mechanic like that is something I can work on if I want to continue the story. But I do not. The story takes place in a small floating city called “Skyloft”. An island above the clouds with magical waterfalls and vegetables where Link is like the only male under 30 — and it shows because every male character is thirsty for it, even in a scene like this where he gives you an item.

Or they were people who seemed more interested in whatever Link was doing than they knew Zelda’s whereabouts. But in fairness, one look at Zelda and you’ll see why everyone is losing their minds to get to her.

I play. He looks like a nightmare. In fact, if you thought the little sky island wouldn’t go generations without serious inbreeding, you might be right because all of these characters have the worst art designs. Like, I don’t want to hear one person hate the art direction in Wind Waker (which I love) when most of the characters in Skyward Sword look like this.

And that Groose guy? He’s not a one-time character that’s comedic relief like Beedle. Groose is your romantic rival and the true crux of the story. He’s one of the most important characters in the game and appears constantly. In fact, if it weren’t for the presence of Fi, the weird magical robot that constantly pulls out a sword to hold your hand almost every time in the game and sometimes actually prevents you from moving in the direction you want because the goal is the other way around, I think Groose appears the most. in games. And he is very close.

Too bad Nintendo made a simple HD remake instead of a remaster with reworked controls because I wanted to see an in-depth explanation of how it all started. But after playing and defeating Skyward Sword, I felt like I saw a high school drama club barely understanding the source material that the show was showing.

Not only that, but the world is empty. So many maps are just wide open areas with the same thing repeating in them. It’s like being in an abandoned mall. And when you meet new people, they pretty much ask you to bring them 3-5 things. It’s all just filler. A large blank map and the usual retrieval quests designed to justify the exploration of such large areas.

And initially I actually found out with an exclusive amiibo that gives you access to a fast-travel system but given that Nintendo literally dropped the ball and released too few—and some of it was picked up by the trash people who threw it online for $100-$ 200 a piece — that feature is missing.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but it’s a remake I’d actually prefer to play for the Wii. And honestly it scares me for the rumored Metroid Prime remaster to come if the Wii controls translate this badly.

Even if you forgive the nightmarish art style and outmoded search methods, since it’s a remake of a decade old game, it doesn’t forgive The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Swrord HD for having poor controls and a lack of quality. life features.
