CHARLESTON — FlipSide, the Gazette-Mail and youth journalism publication HD Media, is seeking contributors for the 2021-22 school year.
Public, private, and homeschooled students are all eligible to apply while they are studying in West Virginia.
FlipSide is an outlet for students to cover what they think is important. What do they like? What do they think needs to be changed?
There are many ways to contribute:
Be a writer
Contributors can write stories that talk to teens about world issues or their favorite songs. To pop culture? Write a movie review or compile a list of your top five favorite podcasts. Like sports? Make predictions for the football season, or write about local star athletes. Have a strong opinion about a lot of things? Write an opinion column.
Be a photographer
Those interested in photography can take photos for articles, covers, or submit themed photos for photo essays.
Become a graphic graphic artist
Graphic artists can create artwork to run with articles and columns. Have an idea for a monthly comic strip or editorial cartoon? Submit to FlipSide. They can also help brainstorm designs for FlipSide covers and social media posts.
Contributors aren’t limited to just doing one thing — they can be writers and photographers, for example. Students are encouraged to come up with their own ideas for articles and columns.
A student does not have to be interested in a career in journalism to contribute. FlipSide looks great on college apps. Some of our former contributors have attended Tufts and Stanford universities.
Students can apply online at www.wvflipside.com/flipside_join. If you wish to contribute to the September issue, the deadline to apply is August 15th. FlipSide accepts applications throughout the year, so if you miss the deadline, you can still contribute to future editions.
FlipSide is a free monthly publication available for viewing online at wvflipside.com.
