Square Enix has taken an unconventional approach to bringing its old Mana RPG series into the 21st century. Secret of Mana is a remake of the 1993 original that maintains the old top-down look while introducing a new—and deeply divisive—3D art style. Then last year he remade Trials of Mana in a more dramatic way, reimagining the 1995 Japanese special installment as a modern third-person action RPG.
The publisher took another approach with Legend of Mana: the original 1999 PSX exclusive got a relatively rudimentary HD remaster. That’s not a bad thing, because as we saw in Secret of Mana, polygons are no match for beautiful pixel art.
Remaster HD is coming to Steam on June 24, which is going to be a pretty long month for the long-lost PC classic. As the trailer above shows, it really is very light touch, but with such an art style it’s hard to argue with. Along with the remastered graphics, the soundtrack has been rearranged and the Ring Ring Land mini-game will be available for the first time outside of Japan.
